What to Know Before Getting Your Child Braces

What to Know Before Getting Your Child Braces

Bringing your child in to Silverman & Associates in Bayside to meet with a family dentist for braces can be scary and exciting all at once. Your child may be excited to have a straighter, more beautiful smile, but he or she may also be nervous about the process or Braceshow the braces will look in the meantime.

As the parent, it's only natural to want to quiet your child's fears. Here's the information you need to know to do just that.

1. Braces Will Hurt... But Not Forever

While the process of visiting a family dentist at Silverman & Associates for braces doesn't hurt at all, your child's mouth will likely be sore a couple of days after the braces are placed. The shifting of teeth can hurt, and the wires rubbing against the inside of the mouth can cause pain as well. Help your child manage the pain with an over-the-counter pain medication and rest assured that it will go away soon.

2. You'll Need to Be Careful About What You Eat

Certain foods are off-limits for anyone wearing braces. These foods include anything sticky or chewy, like candy, taffy or gum, and anything hard, like nuts, raw carrots and ice. Instead, your child will want to stick to a soft diet of foods such as pasta, soft fruit, yogurt, pancakes, soft meats and soups.

3. Good Oral Hygiene is Mandatory

While brushing and flossing will be much more difficult with braces, your child absolutely cannot afford to skip them. Otherwise, your child's teeth will be left at a much higher risk for cavities and discoloration. Ask your family dentist at Silverman & Associates in Bayside for tools that will make the job easier.

4. Braces Aren't Forever

Even if your child feels as though he or she will be wearing braces forever, the truth is that there will come a day when the treatment is done. One part of the treatment that will never end, however, is the need to wear a retainer. Your child will wear a retainer at least part time for the rest of his or her life in order to keep the teeth from shifting back.

5. Don't Be Afraid to Speak Up if There's a Problem

While most people accept braces without much of a problem, sometimes problems do occur. If your child has an allergic reaction or if the braces break, be sure to call your child's family dentist at Silverman & Associates in Bayside for helpful advice and further instructions.
